Información relevante para: Región Andina

During the last 5 years the Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDESAN) has been working on a program focused on watershed analysis as a mechanism to promote strategic alliances based on the valuation of environmental externalities. As a result of this work, considerable progress has been made on the knowledge of the status of Andean watersheds regarding research and development needs, the identification of potential opportunities to promote positive conservation and livelihood changes and on the possibilities for development of collective actions in natural resource management. Progress has also taken place for a number of key mechanisms that will ensure compliance with the objectives set out in the Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF). These mechanisms are related to the organizational structure of stakeholder participation, the prioritization of the research agenda, the formation strategic alliances with the private sector, the utilization of results from pilot watershed as the basis to promote policy changes and to extrapolate to other sites and to the ecoregion as a whole. These mechanisms are part of CONDESAN’s know-how and are described herein.
