Commitments of Funding for GILB

CIP management committed half a million dollars of its 1997 budget for

GILB-related activities. For the next three years, this level of funding

will be maintained with the assistance of two donors: DANIDA and BID.

These and other potential donors are listed below:

· DANIDA: The first commitment for GILB was received in June from Denmark,

for DKR 1.5 million (about $250,000) per year for five years. This

contribution, earmarked for GILB, is in addition to Denmark´s ongoing

contribution to CIP.

· BID: Tentative approval has been given to fund a proposal on developing

stable resistance to late blight. The grant would be for $250,000 for each

of three years.

· BMZ: The Federal Center for Breeding Research on Cultivated Plants of

Quedlinburg, Germany, has received funding from the German Government for

the joint project with CIP "Potato Disease Resistance Mediated by

Antimicrobial Proteins". This involves transformation of potato plants with

genes that are expected to provide resistance to Phytophthora infestans,

Pseudomonas solanacearum and Erwinia carotovora. The total for three years

is DM650,000 (about $434,000), most of which will be invested in late

blight research.

· BFL: The Austrian Agricultural Research Centre is presenting a

pre-proposal to the Austrian Federal Office so as to collaborate, jointly

with CIP, with the Ugandan Potato Programme in resolving the serious losses

late blight brings about there and in neighboring East African countries.

· IFAD: In October 1996, CIP submitted a proposal to the International Fund

for Agricultural Development for "Integrated Management of Potato Late

Blight". This would support research on components of disease management

suited to developing (mostly tropical) countries, and work to integrate and

implement integrated disease management (IDM) in collaboration with a

variety of partners. This proposal, budgeted at around one million dollars

over three years, received an initial positive response during International

Centers Week, 1996.
