WEEK 2: Comment by A.J. Andrade:

The project "Virus Cleaning and healthy potato seed restitution to producers in Jujuy, Argentina", has as inmediate goal to clean the native varieties and replace the infected seed by healthy seed, allowing virus cleaning for the whole region of potato crop in Jujuy. Similarly, it try to oranize - thru the O.CLA.DE Foundation - the potato producers for the dissemination and handling of other seed categories.

Besides this, it performs a permanent plant health monitoring to control and maintain a "clean" zone. The seed delivery process will be performed permanently to the different producers in the region, in principle, for a period of 4 years, and since they are subsistence farmers, they can not afford the seed costs, so the production costs - so far - are covered by the participant institutions

( Cleaning: INTA Balcarce; Production and distribution: UNJU, OCLADE and Cooperatives), meanwhile we are looking for other potential funding sources for this purpose.

El proyecto "Limpieza de virus y restitución de semilla saneada de papa a productores de subsistencia de Jujuy, Argentina ", tiene como meta inmediata limpiar las variedades nativas y reemplazar la semilla enferma por sana con lo cual se limpiaria de virus a toda la region de cultivo de papa en Jujuy. De igual manera, pretende organizar -a travez de la Fundacion O.CLA.DE- a los productores para la difusion y manejo de otras categorias de semilla.

Asi mismo, considera un monitoreo fitosanitario permanente para controlar y mantenter la zona "limpia".

Por otro lado, la entrega de semillas se efectuara en forma permanente a los diferentes productores de la region, en principio, por un lapso de 4 anhos y dado que se trata de agricultores de subsistencia, no cuentan con fondos suficientes para afrontar pagos en concepto de semilla, por lo que los costos de produccion -a la fecha- estan absorbidos por las insituciones participantes (Saneamiento:INTA Balcarce; Produccion y distribucion: UNJU, OCLADE y Cooperativas), mientras tanto se estan buscando fuentes donantes para continuar con este proposito.
