WEEK 1: Moderator's comment to the article of Venegas & Altieri

Dear Drs. Venegas & Altieri:

What were the criteria to choose the 5 varieties that the farmers received? Were they interested in obtaining more varieties? Is there a magic number of varieties that should be included? Are they cultivated in mixtures?

In the Altiplano for Oca and potato the magic number seems to be between 9 and 11 varieties while the range is between 5 and 15; there is no idea about the reasons for these numbers as components of their varietal mixtures.

Cuales fueron los criterios para escoger las 5 variedades que recibieron los agricultores ? Han tenido ellos interes en tener mas ? o hay un numero magico de variedades que se incluyen ? las simebran en mezcla ? En el altiplano en oca y papa el numero magico parece ser entre 9y 11 variedades cuando el rango es 5 a 15 ; no hay indicios de cuales seran las razones de esos numeros como componenetes de sus mezclas.
