25/02/2008 - Conventional analysis of production systems do not used to consider hydrological balances or environmental externalities in determining optimal land uses. Instead, this analysis used results from HRUs analysis (output 1) for Fuquene watershed. Specific HRUs were prioritized according to their potential to contribute positively to environmental and social (relate with profit distribution) externalities. The URH prioritization is needed because the effect of land uses on sediments, N and P production to the lake is not homogeneous in the whole watershed. The externality magnitude...
25/02/2008 - "Andean watershed" project is seeking to develop and apply capacities related with watershed analysis to support decision-making for proper use and management of lands and therefore, the generation of positive externalities. To achieve this purpose, the project wants to improve the analysis and use their results to implement land uses alternatives through co-investment schemes and water-based finance mechanisms. In this way, tools and methods have been developed and released for watersheds decision makers' adoption. One of those tools is a model that was designed to understand...
20/02/2008 - Though daily precipitation data of the past 10 years do not present any variation, the stream flows of Fuquene watershed are decreasing gradually. The lower levels of water stream can be caused by an increase of water demand for domestic use (aqueducts), higher evapotranspiration rates and a reduction of cloud interception as an important portion of the cloud forest and paramo ecosystem have disappeared. Water quantities used to supply aqueducts and evapotranspiration rates are measured in the field and with hydrological modeling. However, the hydrological impact of Paramo land...
20/02/2008 - The local environmental organization (CAR) in collaboration with CIAT and Andean Watershed/CONDESAN-GTZ project made an agreement to jointly participate in a study conducted to identify the main sources of nitrates draining into the Lake. GTZ is providing the funds and coordinating some of the activities; CAR also providing funds is contributing with field technicians' knowledge and CIAT is coordinating the technicalities of the research. CONDESAN is coordinating the whole process as part of its research on payments for environmental services in the Andes. These are considered...
20/02/2008 - The Water and Food Challenge Program approved to CONDESAN a project to pursue the "Payment for environmental services as a mechanism to promote rural development in the upper watersheds of the tropics". Environmental services considered include the provision of water, biodiversity conservation, prevention of soil erosion and potential for mitigation of net emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and carbon sequestration. The project will operate in a group of nine pilot watersheds in various Andean countries. The Fuquene Watershed in the central part of Colombia, near Bogotá, was...
20/02/2008 - "Andean Watersheds" Project is conducted in the Andean region of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Eleven pilot watersheds were selected in order to analyze mechanisms of payment for environmental services using CONDESAN approach. The selected pilot watersheds were: La Miel, Fuquene and Neusa in Colombia; El Angel and Ambato in Ecuador; Piura, Jequetepeque, Arequipa and Altomayo in Peru; and Tunari in Bolivia. With the basic data a hydrological model known as "Soil and Water Assessment Tool-SWAT" has been applied to analyze in an integrated manner characteristics of land use...
